Tether Targets Mining Throne: "We Want to Be the Largest Bitcoin Miner by the End of 2025," Says CEO
Tether, best known as the issuer of the world’s largest stablecoin (USDT), is now setting its sights on something much bigger — becoming the largest Bitcoin miner on the planet. Yes, you read that right.
🔄 From Stablecoins to Mining Power In a recent Bankless podcast, CEO Paolo Ardoino revealed that Tether plans to pour billions of dollars into expanding its Bitcoin mining operations. But it’s not just about profits — the main goal is to safeguard the decentralization of Bitcoin, which underpins the value of USDT. “We want to protect the network that supports our reserves,” Ardoino said. “Realistically, Tether will become the world’s largest Bitcoin miner by the end of this year.” Sounds bold? It is. But Tether already holds over $10 billion in Bitcoin and operates more than 15 mining facilities. Thanks to partnerships with governments in El Salvador, Paraguay, and Uruguay, they have a strong head start.
⚖️ Meanwhile in the U.S.: New Law Pressures Stablecoin Issuers Behind the scenes, another battle is playing out — regulation. The newly passed GENIUS Act in the U.S. Senate imposes strict requirements on stablecoin issuers: full reserve backing, AML/KYC compliance, and transparency. If Tether wants to stay in the U.S. market, it has 18 to 36 months to comply. Tether’s response? Ardoino confirmed the company is working on a new onshore stablecoin specifically for the U.S. market, fully compliant with the new law. He also pointed out that Tether has long cooperated with over 250 law enforcement and regulatory agencies worldwide, including the U.S. Department of Justice, and has helped freeze millions in illicit funds.
🧭 What’s Next? Tether now faces several options: 🔹 Update USDT to meet U.S. regulations.
🔹 Launch a new, regulated stablecoin for the U.S. market.
🔹 Or exit the U.S. entirely and focus on global markets. What’s clear is that Tether is no longer just a stablecoin issuer. It's going big — and if all goes according to plan, it may soon become the biggest Bitcoin miner in the world.
